SHOW RULES and SKILL LEVELS

1.      Anyone is eligible to enter carvings in the show.

2      A carver may enter no more than 2 items in any one category. There is no limit on the number of carvings a carver may enter in the show.

3      Carvings must be registered in the name(s) of the carver who worked on it.

4      A carver may enter one carving in the next skill level to see how they do.  If the carving places 3rd or better, the carver will be required to move to that higher skill level the next show year.

5      Carvings should have been completed during the last two years.

6      The judges in consultation with the show chair may change an entry category for equality of competition and judging.  An award may not be given when quality of the carving does not deserve it.

7      The judge’s determination is final and not subject to review.  Carvers will not talk to judges during the judging session.

8      Hanging pieces must have sturdy device for hanging.

9      The term “Natural” means wood grain must show through any finish. The term “Painted” means ¼ of the total area has been opaqued with paint or stain. The term “Woodburn” means this is a featured portion of this piece.

10    Carvings will remain on display until released by the show chair at the designated day and time.

11    The carver’s signature on the entry form signifies knowledge and compliance with show rules. The host club, officers and members are not responsible for loss or damage.

12    Carvers age 16 and under can enter as a junior.  No Best of Division will be given in Junior.

13    “Medium relief’ is carving defined by moderate 3-D illusion, uneven background level and background lowered sufficiently to raise subject and separate it from background by light to moderate back cutting.

14    All vendors, carvers and participants shall act in a PROFESSIONAL MANNER AND RESPECT FELLOW PARTICIPANTS.

 

Skill Levels and Special Entry Rules-

 1. A CARVING IS ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE IN 2 SHOW YEARS BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETED IN THE LAST 2 YEARS.

2.   A CARVER MUST MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL IF THEY HAVE FULFILLED THE REQUIREMENTS AT THEIR PRESENT LEVEL (See rule #4)

3.   A CARVING MUST BE REGISTERED IN THE NAME OF EACH PERSON WHO WORKED ON IT.  

4. THE SHOW CHAIRMAN AND/OR JUDGES MAY MOVE A CARVING UP TO THE NEXT CLASS IF THEY FEEL IT IS TOO ADVANCED FOR THE CLASS IT IS ENTERED IN. (See rule 6)

Junior-Age 16 or younger-. There is no category entry at this level. Class projects okay. All pieces are judged as one group.

Novice- A carver can enter their carvings at this level until they have won:

1.   1 Best of Show or 1 Best of Class or 2 Best of Division or 5 blue ribbons awards.

Intermediate-  - Carvers who has been carving 2 years or more can enter their carving at this level until they have won:

1.   1 Best of show or 2 Best of Class or 3 Best of Division.

 Advanced- Enter until they have won:

1.  3 Best of Divisions in ADVANCED with the following stipulations:

a.   3 DIFFERENT CARVINGS FOR BEST OF DIVISION in 3 different shows (example one in Spokane, one in Missoula, one in Tri-Cities)

            2 A carver can compete in Advanced Class in each section (example —water fowl & birds) until their awards in that section moved them to Expert, but can continue to enter in Advanced in any other section. In other words you move to Expert in each section as you earn advancement.

Expert-Carvers who
        a.   Have fulfilled advanced awards
   
     b.   Have proof of those awards
   
    
c.   Master carvers (Proof of Masters)

Judging guidelines

Originality and Design—Originality of concept, subject, design or pattern. Unusual or exceptional interpretation of subject matter. Proper proportion, balance, use of light, shadows and color. As applicable: correct perspective, anatomy or realistic rendering of subject. Effective use of wood (color, grain and texture)

Skill—Good carving techniques evident (use of tools, clean cuts, etc.). Properly fitted inserts (such as feathers). Consider difficulty of wood and subject, carving intricacy and execution of details

Surface Finish—Appropriateness and application of finish. Surface preparation and sanding adequate with blemishes and fuzz removed Even and clean application of surface treatment (color, stain, etc.). Enhances overall work. An applicable realistic rendering of subject matter. Treatment of surface problems (checks, scratches, cracks, etc.). 

Presentation—Overall effect, impact and composition. Unity of design, continuity within the piece and artistic appeal. Habitat or elements of the piece support the subject. Effect at varied viewing angles and distances. A ribbon will not necessarily be given in a category or division unless the quality of the carving is appropriate.
